Micro-needling, does it work?
Microneedling is an effective treatment for scars, boosting collagen and encouraging hair growth. This practice dates back to 1995 and with the help of new technology and social media, it has become more popular.
Microneedling involves a device with tiny needles set from 0.5 to 2.5 mm in diameter. The process of puncturing the skin surface with these tiny needle pricks boosts collagen and lifts the skin which reduces the appearance of fine lines and scars.
The benefits of microneedling can be seen immediately after treatment whether it is carried out at home or in the dermatology clinic. There are also long term results from consistent use of this treatment. According to a 2008 study, skin treated with four microneedling sessions spaced one month apart, produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing treatment. Serum is usually used after a microneedling session to enhance results. Micro needling has many other benefits such as reactivating dormant hair follicles, reducing cellulite. While microneedling has many benefits, it is possible to over do it, especially when doing it DIY at home. It is always safer to have a professional carry out this treatment.
