INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: Huda Kattan
Huda Kattan, born on October 2, 1983 in Oklahoma City, is a prominent American makeup artist, beauty blogger, and entrepreneur of Iraqi descent. She is the visionary behind the highly successful cosmetics brand, Huda Beauty.
Kattan’s journey started when she moved to Dubai in 2006 with her father, who accepted a teaching job in the emirate. After studying makeup in Los Angeles, she returned to Dubai and landed a job as a makeup artist with Revlon. In 2010, she started a WordPress blog named “Huda Beauty,” where she shared makeup tutorials and tips, which quickly gained a following.
In 2013, Kattan launched her own cosmetics line, Huda Beauty, starting with false eyelashes. The brand was an instant success and soon expanded its range to include eye shadow palettes, liquid lipsticks, lip liners, highlighter palettes, foundations, concealers, baking powders, and liquid eyeshadows. Kattan’s influence on social media also grew, with over 47 million Instagram followers as of 2020. She has been hailed as one of the “ten most powerful influencers in the world of beauty” by Forbes magazine.
Aside from her success in the beauty industry, Kattan is also known for her philanthropic efforts through her brand, Huda Beauty.
In 2020, the company donated $500,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and in 2021, Kattan spearheaded a petition for beauty brands to disclose when they’ve retouched or edited their images or videos to help dismantle “toxic” social media beauty standards.
Kattan is married to Christopher Goncalo, and they have a daughter named Nour Gisele. One of Kattan’s sisters, Mona, is her business partner, while another sister, Alya, manages her social media.
