CBD in Skincare, What does it do?
With a huge rise in the popularity of CBD also known as cannabidiol which is a chemical compound found in the Cannabid Sativa plant. It is used in products as it is known to produce a feeling of relaxation and calmness. So why is CBD used in skincare and what are the benefits? Firstly it is important to distinguish between Hemp oil and CBD oil. Hemp oil is the oil extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant which is used in many skincare products for its healthy fats and moisturizing benefits. Hemp oil does not contain any CBD.
CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors which are in our skin, these receptors control our body functions such as: stress, pain, inflammation, appetite, sleep, immunity and how much oil our skin produces. The use of CBD is believed to work by interacting with our skin’s cannabinoid receptors having effects such as: pain regulation, reduced inflammation, control of lipid production (which can help reduce acne) and reduced skin proliferation (which is the cause of psoriasis). CBD is known to be highly anti-inflammatory and also a great antioxidant which bares the benefits for skin of reducing redness, irritation and also reduced signs of aging.
The way in which you use the CBD oil will also have a bearing on it’s effects, for example: taking the CBD orally as opposed to applying a skincare product to the area in which you wish to receive the effects of the CBD. Ingesting the CBD oil orally will ensure it reaches your bloodstream but if you wish to reap the skincare benefits of the substance such as the previously mentioned anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects the best way to use CBD would be to apply it in the form or a balm/moisturiser on the skin.
